FAQS
What do I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?
If you think that your child has special educational needs speak to their teacher, key worker or the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). If your child is below school age you may want to speak to your health visitor or doctor. Or contact the Isle of Wight Council for more information.
How will the setting support my child’s learning and development?
As a childminder I work alone so I am solely responsible for your child’s learning and development (along with other care givers if appropriate).
How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs?
There will be an appropriate curriculum that meets specific needs. Planning will be outcomes-based to support the needs of the child.
There will be effective teaching which focuses on meeting the needs of individual children and management of support.
How accessible is the setting?
There is a large step to the front door and then stairs to my first floor property.
How will I know how well my child is doing?
Parents can view their child’s progress through photos, detailed observations, next steps, termly reports and tracking.
There will be clear and regularly reviewed plans for children, ensuring they make good progress from their starting points. A range of ‘interventions’ (support programmes) will be used to meet different needs, for example small group work, personalised programmes.
There will be a graduated approach to assessment and high quality practice in assessment. There will be an established method for recording agreed outcomes of assessment and communicating the outcomes to those involved, especially parents. Settings will support Education Health and Care Needs Assessment and Education Health and Care plans.
Progress and plans will be regularly reviewed and evaluated to inform next steps.
How will you help me support my child’s learning?
The diaries that get sent home daily have space where you can add your own observations of your child such as things they may have done at home as well as next steps you may want to work on. I will also offer regular meetings to assure we are working together on supporting your child.
I can provide parents and carers with ideas to support their child’s learning and help with access to resources.
What support will there be for my child’s overall well–being and social, emotional and behavioural development?
I have a healthy eating policy and behavioural policy in place and details of these are available on request. There will be extra support arrangements to aid the social, emotional and behavioural development of children and young people with SEND, including measures to prevent bullying.
What specialist services and expertise are available or accessed by the setting?
I will work on an individual basis to quickly access any new training, support or services required for me to be able to care for a child with SEND.
What training and development is done by staff supporting those with SEND?
As a childminder I am responsible for accessing my own training and ensuring that I continually keep up to date my knowledge. I am committed to accessing the relevant when needed to support children with SEND in my care.
How will my child be included in activities outside the setting?
Parents and carers will be involved with the planning of appropriate trips and activities to ensure their child is catered for. See here for a list of some trips we go on regularly.
How will the setting help children transfer to the next phase of education?
Transition arrangements will be carefully planned to meet the needs of individual children. I will provide a transition report and work with new settings and parents or carers to ensure your child is prepared for their transition.
How are parents and carers involved in the setting?
I welcome input from parents into how I can improve my setting and make necessary changes to ensure your child’s individual needs are met where possible. This is a continual process and will adapt with the children.
